Hi! I'm Jarren Genck, a graphic designer currently located in northern Illinois. I graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Communications and a minor in Studio Arts. I have over seven years of professional experience with a focus on package design and print production. If the weather permits, I spend a lot of my time riding my motorcycle. On the flip side I watch a lot of movies, and enjoy a variety of video games and board games with friends.

Anthem Series

The largest project I've tackled so far in terms of number of products involved. The Anthem Series is a unique clipper line which includes one cordless and two corded clippers. The series needed to share the theme and style, with the accommodation of being an art box or art sleeve. This darker theme won out against a lighter version and all three products sport a reticulating varnish.

  • Objective: Full artwork for a new clipper series

  • Deliverables: Frontal concepts, color scheme, styling

Lifeproof Pro

A product refresh for the US market, this one is among my favorite works across multiple design concepts. Two of the concepts apply the familiar Wahl vertical features on the right side and then a splash of blue to make the overall package pop. While the winner of the bunch (and my personal favorite) goes for a more subdued darker blue with bright yellow. I also created an effective way to blend the guard callout into the design itself.

  • Objective: Frontal concepts for proposed product refresh

  • Deliverables: Frontal concepts, color scheme, styling

300 Series

This project focused on a major refresh for the 300 Series clipper and was to be sold in the MEA market. It retains the common right side features associated with many Wahl's clipper products, while offering a unique vertical title. The accessory fan was my way of adding an additional unique touch, while accommodating for space. This artwork sleeve contains both English and Arabic throughout.

  • Objective: New packaging artwork for a new product

  • Deliverables: Full artwork sleeve, frontal concepts

Groomsman

The Groomsman was first of several refreshes for some global markets. I was to develop some initial concepts before handing off to the region's graphic designer(s).I decided to go with a darker background to allow the trimmer to really stand out. The angled accent line draws attention, separates the layout elements and gives a pop of color. The icons were simplified to fit the overall aesthetic and to reduce clutter on the front.

  • Objective: Concepts for new product packaging

  • Deliverables: Frontal concepts, color scheme, styling

Elite Pro Trimmer

A smaller project, this artwork carton was used over specific mailers boxes. This artwork was not for use in brick & mortar locations, and was limited to specific online retailers. Because of this, the design elements didn't need to follow the usual guidelines.

  • Objective: New artwork mailer box

  • Deliverables: Full artwork box, icons

OMNI Ad

Updated multiple times throughout the year, this ad is ran in the Mass Market Retailer and Chain Drug Review magazines. The latest design was an evolution with updated images, a new featured product, the inclusion of a QR code, and of course a nice pop of color.Further updates through the year saw images swapped, products updated, and background color changes (to help easily differentiate ads).

  • Objective: Ad Refresh

  • Deliverables: Full page ad, updated throughout the year

Product Catalogs

An annual project that showcases some of Wahl's Consumer Product line-up. Products are separated into categories with special product lines having their own focus area.As this is updated yearly, products are often removed, added, or updated throughout.

  • Objective: Catalog Refresh

  • Deliverables: Full tri-fold catalog, icons

MultiCut Pro

Another project involving a global market refresh of the MultiCut clipper. The design I went with displays more abstract elements paired with pops of yellow and blue. The feature icons and copy were simplified and shortened to give the design more focus.

  • Objective: Frontal concepts for proposed product refresh

  • Deliverables: Frontal concepts, color scheme, styling, icons

Total Grooming Kit

This artwork was needed for a small excess product kit. Due to the specific product and market as well as a non-typical carton, I was allowed to do a somewhat different design, similar to the Elite Pro Trimmer.I chose a turquoise color to contrast against the trimmer models on the front. The right side features close-ups of the various heads you'll get in the kit, while the left shows their uses.

  • Objective: Full artwork for a mailer

  • Deliverables: Full artwork box

Haircut & Beard

This was one of my first full artworks I did for Wahl. The product manager wanted the front artwork to stand out from the usual designs. This frontal layout served as the basis for Wahl's current cordless consumer clippers.

  • Objective: New frontal design and full artwork refresh

  • Deliverables: Full artwork sleeve, styling, artwork layout

Home Pro Cordless

Originally designed for a clamshell, this artwork was expanded upon to accommodate a small box with a hang tab.The dark background allows the white lid clipper to really stand out. A simple dashed stripe pattern gives the background a bit more character and cyan provides the accent color to catch your eye.

  • Objective: New artwork for a major product refresh

  • Deliverables: Full artwork box, artwork layout, clamshell inserts

Clip N Shave

This project began as simply applying an old design to a new dieline, and ended up becoming a new design that kept the overall theme and elements of the old.The focus for this product is its unique offering of two heads for a wide variety of uses. The back splits the features between the two attachments. The green was changed to be even more vibrant than before.

  • Objective: Complete artwork overhaul for existing product

  • Deliverables: Full artwork box

Face & Body Hair Remover

A concept for a new line of female trimmers. This model offered various attachments for trimming, detailing, and shaving. The overall design revolved around minimal elements and coral colors.I provided the frontal concepts, stying, and color theme which were then handed off to the region's graphic design team.

  • Objective: Frontal concepts for a regional product intro

  • Deliverables: Frontal concepts, color scheme, styling

Other Work

Logo - USA Series

The Anthem Series originally started off as the USA Series. This is the logo I created for the series branding.I created custom characters with the appearance of overlapping each other. The logo was offered in multi-color and single-color options.

Logo - WIU Purple & Gold Auction

I create this logo for the 26th annual WIU Purple & Gold auction. This was done during my internship at the WIU Athletics department. The logo was used on brochures, banners, social media, event forms, and more.

Promotional Poster - iHeartRadio

The VP of our department at Wahl asked me to create a promotional poster for an iHeartRadio music festival. This poster would be displayed company wide at many locations.I chose a bright selection of colors and used the colors throughout the entire design with a focus on the artists that would be at the festival. This allowed the poster to stand out despite having no images provided to work with. Simply text, shapes, and colors.

Gatefold Brochure - WIU Athletics

I met with the Director of the WIU Athletics Department on this one during my internship. They were doing a refresh on the department goals and values and this brochure was the main print item. The closed gate shows Rocky (the WIU mascot).

Magazine Article - Conceptual

A conceptual project of transferring an article from digital to print. Layout and formatting was done to accommodate pictures.Credits to Cycle World
